Lyrics

“ON MY OWN” – King Dice, 2008

I
The struggle to survive in Dominica
Is getting harder and harder
And if you can survive here
You can make it anywhere
When your own government – will not help you
The financial institutions don’t care about you
As a young singer and struggling man
I really bawling – here in my home land

Chorus
Imagine me as a singer
In my Dominica
I’m on my own
Some getting concession
While me as a young man
On my own
All politicians – doing the same – thing
Is more the foreigners – and them they helping
With nowhere to turn
Struggling alone
Youth with frustration – is gang or migration
What you expect
Young people to do
When the system – leave them – out there on their own

II
And I wonder if I leave and run
Would life out there – be any better
One farmer who abandoned his land
Told me sadly – he cant take no more
When you see you’re the one who give the most
And its you who suffering the worst
As a farmer – here in my own country
I cant provide for – my own family

Chorus
Imagine me as a farmer
In my Dominica
On my own
Some getting concession
While me a local man
On my own
The politicians all – doing the same thing
Is more the foreigners – they always helping
But the country is able
Once you plant a seed
We just have to work it – with help we can make it
when Hurricane gone
Farmers bound to run
When government – leave them – out there on their own

III
If you fall – ing short on education
Small business – is the Way to go
But there’s so many limitations
A business man – told me so
If you not be a puppet to the politician
Don’t expect – to get any assistance
As an entrepreneur – and a local man
I need the help more – than the foreign man

Chorus
Me as an entrepreneur
In my Dominica
On my own
Some getting concession
But the local business man
On my own
The politicians all – doing the same thing
Is more the foreigners – and them they helping
Tax here like hell
Business taking blows
Is either you sell – to the Chinese or close
Business cant go on
Cant get blood from stone
With the VAT – sucking us – right down to the bone

ON MY OWN

IV
What single parents here going through
Every day is a miracle
This single mother she tell me plain
How she budgets maths cannot explain
The price of fuel food electricity
Cooking gas books and cable TV
As a single mother – to feed my children
I’ve had to do things against my conscience

Chorus
Imagine a single mother
In my Dominica -on my own
Some get material and money
But nobody know me – on my own
All politicians doing the same thing
Is just their supporters alone they helping
With the high cost of living
Women have no option
So many are turning
To the oldest profession
So women must come – when men call their cell – phone
When the system – leave them – out there on their own
